Survival and control
Looking back at various periods of the past, we
can ask the fairly simple question of how did we
survive that. For example, consider the period of
1950 through 1970 or 1960 through 1980 or 1980
through 2000. All these time periods had a
fair share of turbulence, and yet some how we
arrived at the end.
Some might suggests it was our social structures,
and basics like some people call culture. Some
might have alternative suggestions. Still some
would say, " it's complicated "....
But all these notions of structure imply by their
nature some issue of control.
So examine control. Start with something simple like
a light switch. The switch is a control mechanism, and
the operator requires some feedback, like, did the light
go on? If not, well, there are a sequence of events
that go on from that point. So at the heart of it is
who is really in control? The light, the switch, or
the operator? Other examples of controls are of course
things like ovens and microwaves.
So, as mentioned previously, control and power are
two different things. Power of course has a variety
of sources. Control of course is inherently different
by it's nature.
So back to survival, how does that happen? Power,
control, culture? It may really be complicated.
